Adventures in Linux - FreeNAS
#1
This could be adventures in FreeNAS as well. I installed FreeNAS some years ago on an old computer with two drives. I wasted a big drive to install FreeNAS which always takes up the full drive and had a second drive for data. The problem I have is that the FN unit isn't capable of dealing with more drives. I have craploads of drives and a number of nice 1 TB Sata drives aching to be used in a computer that can handle 5 drives or so.

Anyhow, after making it work, I never really dug into all the fun I could have with it. I think I stalled on getting Plex working with my Samsung BR player.

In the meantime it backs up my computers and holds all my movies and TV shows. I also have an external USB drive that backs up pictures.

I only backup data, not full computer stuff except the Snow Leopard has a dedicated Time Machine Thunderbolt drive. I hate proprietary ports and cables. FU Sony for making it a thing.

I just decided to backup my music, so it's quite busy, which is why my current experiment is probably failing.

Soooo, Suzy (the name of my multiple personality Ideapad while in Linux mode), to my surprise found my NAS quite easily. I'll worry about mounting it or something later. My first test is to see if I can actually run media from it.

Really this came about as an alternative to trying to figure out how to share my iTunes playlists to Suzy directly from Hailey (Snow Leopard).

Sidenote. I love the name Hailey and also Lilly. If I ever had a daughter, I wanted to name her Hailiana or some such combining the two. I probably wouldn't. In the end Lillian is a very nice name on it's own and I'd love to pass that down.

I tried running an episode of About A Boy directly from the server in the default video thingy. It didn't work. No worries, VLC is already here and it does everything. What do you mean it doesn't have the right codecs? Sooo, Dragon Player? Locked the whole system.   Hmmmmm...

Time to get back to my Linux course. I procrastinate because it's talking about 'man' and man pages seem boring.

Anyhow, the music backup is puttering along, increasing from 3 hours left to 5 hours left. Yay! I hate that Buffalo router. DD-WRT is awesome my ass. Only I would splurge to buy an expensive router who's model specifically doesn't work with my hardware. Up yours Buffalo.

Actually the Buffalo thing comes from listening to a particular person. I thought he knew his stuff and he raved about Buffalo and other products. I have since realized he was a blivet and all his advice along with money owed me has disappeared. He even got someone to fund him into a rival business and crashed and burned taking off with people's domains and such. Last I heard he works for a phone company.

Where was I? I was interrupted by the local museum paying me for Webroot. Apparently I'll get some kind of 'in kind' donation receipt for my work. Yay! money and donations..... One of these days I'll even be able to pay for the listings in the phonebooks! If I was really dreaming, I might put a down payment on the hydro! For any Yanks reading this, Hydro is the electric bill.

I got Plex up and running awhile back. It's pretty handy. While working on making it pick language tracks I had to sign up for the web site account. Whooppeee... Now I can make a setting control language. It would be nice to simply select language on playback. Oh well, it's free. I essentially stopped all other media activity except Sportsnet and VIPBox for hockey. Plex is just easier than Netflix and I can watch it from pretty much anywhere.... Supposedly.
