My Online Game Server - tmjva - 08-07-2015 Those who have read my HackMaster threads may have noticed my Signature Line regarding, "Ye Olde Fashioned Text Games at: http://invent3k.openmpe.com/empire/ Well this server HAS been down for a couple months due to lack of IT support. Basically my IT Dept. due to a reset, lost the Network Address Table on a cheesy COX business circuit. Due to loss of competent personnel, lacked the will to put it back. "We are discontinuing the COX line anyway." they said. In any case this provided the incentive to re-install the original server 2000 miles away in another state that two years ago had a head crash and also lacked the funds to fix it. I was able to sweet talk a hardware vendor to provide manpower and the hardware and now the original server is back online. For those who are into technical things, not only does the server provide the web pages but also provides the terminal services to run the games. It is a four processor HP3000 Series 969. Anyone wanting to log in simply needs to go to the web page, read the log in instructions and telnet to empire.openmpe.com. Most of the games are EMPIRE games which are a precursor to the the Civilization type building games. It is written (mostly) in PASCAL and has had many improvements since it was first developed in 1973 on an HP2000C. P.S. Aside from the EMPIRE games, the server also has a neat text game of solitare MillBornes but you need an HP terminal emulator to run it. Do not fear, there is a link to QCTerm which you can download that runs on Windows, (or with some trouble under WINE in Linux). Log on with HELLO PLAYER.MILLBORN and will become self-explanatory. It starts in French, but enter the word ENG and it will switch to English. (It also has Dutch, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Danish and Galactic.)
